"Thanks for another fascinating demo!"

Oil painting workshop in Stroud
I spent an enjoyable day teaching a small socially distanced group alla prima oil painting techniques
at Pegasus Art in Stroud.
Unfortunately a few people that booked the course dropped out at the last minute due to the rise in covid-19 cases but we still had a fun day!
My next socially distanced workshop here is palette knife portrait painting on October 24th 2020.

#portraitsfornhsheroes

Here’s my second portrait for #portraitsfornhsheroes. I challenged myself by painting Katy just with palette knifes. I painted her portrait as part of the #portraitsfornhsheroes initiative created by fellow Oxford art society member and painter friend Tom Croft.

Katy's experience her own words.
“I’m a theatre recovery nurse. I qualified as a nurse in 2012 working first at Stoke Mandeville Hospital and later the BMI. During the full-on Covid period both NHS and private hospitals dedicated themselves to the common Covid struggle. The private sector was contracted to the NHS. I did a number of long shifts in an area designated for Covid patients with “hot and cold” areas - an off shoot of ITU. I also had informal caring responsibilities to my every father (recently widowed), whilst trying to socially distance.”

Portrait painting course.
I had an enjoyable day running a workshop on portrait painting with painting knives at Micklems farm near Henley on Thames. It was fully booked but 5 people cancelled because of the coronavirus, I think this will be my last workshop for a few months while covid 19 is still at large.

Portrait painting demonstration.
I had an enjoyable evening demonstrating portrait painting from life at Virginia Water art society.
As ever it was a challenge with only 2 hours including a tea break.
"This evening Mark Fennell came to Virginia Water Art Society to demonstrate painting in oil the Portait of Anthony one of our members. The likeness was incredible and in less than 2 hours Mark talked us through his process. The evening was very enjoyable and everyone was impressed by the results, thank you Mark"

Buckinghamshire portrait artist has work selected for The RBA.
My self portrait – The diagnosis has been selected for The Royal Society of British Artists annual open exhibition at The Mall Galleries London.

“I painted this self portrait with palette knives soon after being diagnosed with Lymphoma, I think it reflects how I felt at the time.” Receiving the cancer diagnosis was such a shock, but I felt compelled to paint himself and show how i was feeling. The chemotherapy treatment was successful, and i now feel healthy and well”.

Not only are you a fine artist but an excellent tutor and I very much appreciated the preparation you made to ensure the students had all they needed to help them create a good painting. It was huge fun as well! We are already looking forward to the next one and I will send you some dates soon.”
